Ladakh has inspired many

Many a times to come back again and again, to this land of the mystical. If you get away from the tourist circuit, you can again find that part of Ladakh , that the early visitors to this land swear by. Its mystery, its unique sense of  magnificence yet humility.

This Post designs trips that helps you see Ladakh in all its glory. Not the glossed over, ac bus, hotel stays, packed food version. But the real Ladakh, with honest smiles, salty teas, apricot jams, friendly locals living simple lives. We have been to this side of  Ladakh every year since our inception, and every year we try to do things different, discover new facets to this magical land, which has won our heart over since the first time we went, The trips we design are very personal, with elements that appeal to us as travelers: local food, local stays, hikes, local experiences , without having to give up on the basic comforts. Customsied trip plans to Ladakh are our ode to this land. We hope to take adventurers to this mysterious land and help them see it from close quarters, its nuances, its heritage, and live its story every day.

We started with customised trips since 2010 and  we plan to host many of you this year too. Here are typical trip elements that we inlude in getaways that we plan. Tell us which of these interest you too.

1. Stay at a local’s home

Most of our stays are in family run guesthouses or homestays, giving you a local flavour in your stay. Interacting with them everyday for your meals and tea, gardening with them as you see them work their farms, learning about their cuisine, their culture and getting a close up glimpse at their life can be rewarding. Their lives are so different from ours and yet so similar, its amazing. Despite being separated by 11000ft, You will start feeling like home in the mountains. They also tend to be located beyond the main market, so its far away from the chaos of the main road and the commercial establishment. Tucked away , beside a rivulet, overlooking the mountains they are a well kept secret. Try it!

2.  On two wheels

Bicycles explorations to Stok from Leh. Flowers, and fields,bridges and ridges will pass you by, as you pace yourself on your trusted bike on your local exploration. Go to see the King’s residence or explore the many bylanes of Nubra Valley. This two wheeler helps you on your leisurely expeditions in this mountain land.

Ladakh has always been a bikers first love! The harsh landscape, the thrill, the uncertainity all packs a punch. If you dont feel like bringing your bike all the way, we can locally procure the bike for you and do the Nubra-Turtuk circuit or the Great Lakes Circuit of Pangong and Tso Moriri.

3. Explore lesser known villages of Turtuk, Bagso, Ule, Lamayuru. Beautiful apple orchards will greet you, mustard fields, tall grass and garden full of flowers. Quite a shocker for this cold desert, but the lower altitude of these hamlets help the farming. Go for village walks, talk to local artisans, appreciate their local art, and marvel. Marvel at the beauty that surrounds you.  Spend an entire day in these lovely pockets, far away from the jostle of the crowds.

4. Experience Experience Experience

Riverside picnics, visit to local artisans like silver smiths or a metal smiths, local cuisine walks are some of the few experiences that we sprinkle our trips with. Experiences that will add a special punch to the whole magic of Ladakh.

5. Camping under a thousand million stars

Sites like these are common. A sky sparkling with stars, and a lit up tent, thick blankets and plenty of conversations to keep one warm in the high altitude. 6. Treks

A great way to explore the valleys and passes of the region is on foot. Starting from moderate 3 days treks to the Sham Valley to longer more intensive treks to Tso Moriri or the Zanskar. We help you manage the treks with guides, quaint homestays and camping experiences, some ornate, some as simple as it can get.

6. Festivals

We keep you in the loop about all festivals that happen in season, so that if you are planning a trip in July, you can also keep in mind the dates of the festival in that month. Festivals are colourful affairs in Ladakh, with song and dance, local food and a whole lot of energy. All You Need to Know about UT (for Ladakh)

• A Union Territory is a sub-national administrative division of India, in the federal framework of governance. Unlike the states of India, which have their own elected governments, union territories are ruled directly by the federal government or central government. There are many UTs like Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep or Pondicherry in India.

Pros of the Case :

The Demand for UT  status is attributed mainly  to Buddhists of Leh. Below is an outline for this demand:

• Demand for UT status for Ladakh is rooted in resentment against Kashmiri , administrative and political control.  In the 1970s, the demand for a “Central Administration” and UT was undermined by dividing Ladakh on communal basis by creating two districts.
•  Kashmiri leadership successfully kept both the communities divided through tactful “divide and rule” policy.

It is felt in Leh that Kargili leaders  have been  made insecure by suggesting that UT status will make Muslims of Ladakh to fall under the Buddhist dominance and they will suffer enormously thereafter.

• The idea of  “Greater Ladakh” which  is considered an idea of  former Chief minister of J&K Sheikh Abdullah. The concept of GL was to bring in the multilateral dimension of involving Pakistan, China, India and UN Security Council to focus on Ladakh. It seems the concept had not attracted the attention of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
• Kashmiri discrimination against Buddhist and Muslim of Ladakh had been equal.  Kargil has remained more backward despite religious affinity, despite geographical proximity and despite better connectivity with Kashmir.
• The demand is synonymous with the demand for empowerment of the cold desert, which has suffered discrimination at the hands of successive state governments despite having been given the autonomous hill councils -— Leh district got it in 1995, Kargil district in 2002. The backwardness of the desert is visible in the impoverished neighbourhoods. The Ladakh region also puts up with complete isolation for six or more months when roads connecting it to the rest of the country are closed by heavy snowfall. These are large issues which fall under the purview of the state government.

Those opposing the demand say that the exercise could lead to disintegration of the state and would require a constitutional amendment by the state legislature. The Centre cannot do anything unilaterally about the issue. Apart from the opposition of the Kashmir-centric parties and the Shia Muslim population of Kargil, there are constitutional hurdles in granting UT status to the region. First, it cannot be given to Leh only. There is Muslim population in Leh district, while the Zanskar area of Kargil is Buddhist-dominated. This can start, it is feared, an ethnic and religious conflict.

         The Centre is empowered to declare any area UT. But that is an exception not a rule. For example, Chandigarh was declared a UT because of the dispute between two states, Punjab and Haryana.

The state of J&K in the Constitution has been defined the way its territory existed in an undivided state in 1947. As of now, one-third of its part is under illegal occupation of Pakistan.

• As for Art 370 as i understand it .There are two aspects to the issue viz, how does Art 370 operate and what are it's failings.By existing constitutional law Art 370 cannot be abrogated or vitiated but, by exploiting it's legal infirmities,one can,if national political will is determined. Watering down 370 will amount to political chicanery because it militates against the objective of the Art-to give greater autonomy and power than other states. I am not advocating rescinding the Article,for national integeration can flow automatically from deft rather than abrasive politics.

Art 370 empowers President to define the constitutional relation of J&K with India. It is the bridge linking The State with The Union. Art 370 Constitution Application to J&K Order 1954' is the presidential authority that applies union legislation to the state. President, however, has to exercise his powers within the allowance of the Instrument of Accession (IOA). This executive power is exercised by president through Parliament. Parliament is empowered to make laws on subjects in the union list in "consultation" with state govt and make laws on subjects in the concurrent list in "concurrence" with the state govt. Art 249 and Art 250 only empower the union to over rule the state legislations that conflict with the union legislation(in the areas prescribed above). In order to be able to abrogate/amend Art 370, President can issue a notification,only if recommended by the constituent Assembly. Art 368 on amendment, is also fettered on this issue. Besides, Art 147c of the constitution of J&K does not permit introduction of the bill for amendment or seeking any change to Art 370. State legislature does not carry constituent powers. Basic structure of the constitution cannot be changed by the Assembly unless specially empowered and then, should not get struck down by judicial review. Now, the devil's part(scope for abrogation/amendment   The legal infirmities that qualify Art 370 for a review, as per my reckoning are:

On 26 Nov 1949, when the constitution of India was being adopted,future relationship of J&k was still evolving. However due to the exigency of finalizing the constitution of India, a temporary provision in the form of Art 370 was incorporated.

The principle of 'Rubuc Sic Standibus' defines that if the existing situation that lead to the creation of a law/Article/Act, has undergone a material change then the legislation becomes ineffective.

Art 370 violates the fundamental principle of 'equality' among states. This is a violation of international constitutional law.

By virtue of this Art., the population of J&K is deprived of fundamental and inalienable human rights that are guaranteed to rest of the population of India through Articles 14 to 32(fundamental rights). Progressive legislations also fail to reach J&K.

Special status and preferential powers were temporarily granted so that the state could come out of the backwardness-allegedly on account of mal administration by the then Maharajah. During this period,even the Dalits in India have created a creamy layer for themselves-not to talk about J&K.

Governor is the part of legislature and head of the state executive(Govt). He has absolute discretionary powers vide Art 166, that are so powerful that even the president would itch-to be a Guv.

Sovereignty of India over J&K was consummated by ratification of the IOA and promulgation of the constitution of J&K on 17 Nov 1957 by the state assembly. Art 3 of this constitution and Article 1 of the constitution consider J&K as a part of the union of India. Art 147c of the constitution of J&k prohibits introduction of a bill into the state legislature,that intends to abrogate or amend Art 3. Principles of sovereignty, as observed in international law demand national integration.

If 40% of the population of the country feel that a review of this piece of legislation is merited,it is a legal and politically ethical point to ponder upon,by the union legislature.

Constitutional experts quote two judgements to support the statement that prez can amend/abrogate Art 370. Puran lal lakhan pal V UoI AIR 1961 and Sampat Prakash V state of J&K AIR 1970. I have not gone through these judgements.

But jurisprudence dictates that life and lore of a society do not progress by law and adversarial legislation. At the same time, philosophy of Roscoe Pound has legitimized social engineering through state legislations and Socio-legal movements. PIL, RTI and host of other legislations remain a beacon in this regard. A national debate on Art 370 is thus, very much in order.

As per international law, Instrument of Accession is not a final document. It is only an expression of consent. Consent to agree to a treaty on the subject. By interpretation, the details are subject to final settlement.

Zojila to open late this Month

Zojila, one of the highest mountain pass in the world will open up for traffic at the end of this month. The Srinagar-Leh highway will open for traffic in the last week of April which is one month late from last year.
The Border Roads Organization is clearing 30 feet or more of snow accumulated by wind and avalanches on the vital highway. Project Vijayak of the BRO has reached at Machoyi, 26 km from Drass, an official said .

Previous vs New CEC

Finally the wait is over.  Haji Asghar Ali Karbalai (HAAK) is the New CEC LAHDC Kargil, Though not official yet as on 5th of september. The people have been expecting a big change and it is almost done with now. The fate of the people of Kargil has been decided. They have to work under the leadership of HAAK yet again. Unlike the first time haji has ruled over kargil, he has promised a better governance and a people friendly environment. The top priority being the education sector, he has made it clear for the teaching line employees that they are going to face more strictness than they faced during his first tenure. And this is what the Young guns of the district have been expecting.

The previous CEC has beenmore of a funny character than a Chief Executive Councillor. His speeches made people laugh and at the same time made them curse their own fate for being ruled by such a person. This is evident and I don't need any explaination for this here. Even his supporters claim this and also it is evident from the he wasn't among the NC/ISK candidate for CEC this year. Human nature isn't an excuse when it comes to ruling and leading a society for five long years. There is no space for any mistake. the people may seem to ignore this fact but I believe they are equally involved in it, this so called human nature. I'd really want to  call it, KARGILI NATURE.

We had lalu prasad yadav at the national level but our previous cec can't be compared with him in any way. Atleast Lalu used to speak in the parliament and  knew how to demand and stand for his right. For the right of his people. But with our Previous CEC it was all the opposite. He FAILED.

I was reading the FB posts of THE GREAT SONAM WANGCHUK , where he was seen confessing about his childhood mischiefs and at the same time he told us about how to deal with corruption. He was telling us what role we should play if we come to know that our parents are corrupt. Should we stop loving them or ignore the fact that they are corrupt and love them. He was of the view that Corruption is a disease, just like how you should have treated your sick parents , you should treat your corrupt parents. You don't stop loving them , you look out for a cure for them.

Coming back to the hopes and the expectations we have from Karbalai, all I would say is it is ENORMOUS. At the same time I really would appeal my fellow mates not to expect much and associate all  your hopes with him. Who knows if he  drowns  from the weight of your hopes and expectations.

At the end I really hope karbalai acts a bit more maturely than he acted in his first tenure. He should give up his ego and walk with his legs on earth. All the very best and we hope a better and brighter kargil this time around.

CEC LAHDC Kargil and Fields he should Work in?

The most important Day for the people of Kargil  is when they vote and choose their leader.  The day has come and gone. 22nd August was the day. 60-70% of turn out speaks a lot about their trust in democracy. 
The council general election which would decide the fate of 26 Councillors was due  this year i.e. 2013. 
The main political parties being  CONGRESS(INC) and  National Conference(NC), But the people followed their age old trend and decided their leaders on the basis of IKMT and ISK. People are learning from their past incidents and this year there was no report of any violence from the otherwise DOGS AND CATS or IKMT AND ISK. It was peaceful and people are proud of.

The Hanging Counscil

No party has secured full majority  and the fate of the COUNCIL is still hanging until a compromise is made between the Parties and The independent councillors on 2nd of sept.
To tell you about the maths NC/ISK (supporting independent councillors included) 11seats and Congress/IKMT have secure 13  out 26 seats. The two remaining councillors won unanimously and are still to decide whom they should support. Two days and Kargil will  get her next CEC. 
Remember this is the Third general election of the LAHDCK, the first term was completed by IKMT/congress and the second was completed by ISK/NC. 
Karbalai is known for his heart wrenching speeches and is liked by the Youth and  the Employed section of the society, As I have Noticed. But  I see what he speaks  as just Rhetoric. Never seen implementing what he say at the podium.
Kacho Ahmad Ali khan, who ruled full five years of the second term of LAHDCK is  known for his ........ I don't know for what. Most of my  friends have got funny stories about him. Like when He was Speaking on The Degree college Kargil he said, "we would have atleast Five MBBS seats from this college this year ".I don't know if it's true or false but His own supporters have admitted to it. On an another occasion, he mistook Evening for morning , republic day for independence day, etc. etc. I guess it's a human nature and can be ignored if he has got that perfect Leadership Quality. But Honestly, neither did I enjoy his speeches nor  his Leadership. I hope we see a new face if NC win or Karbalai, if Congress win.
The situation is still hanging and let's hope we see a brighter Kargil.

   This is 21st century and without internet and telephone you can't come out of 19th century.the situation is kargil is worse.  Though The high terrain and the geographical structure is the main reason to our backwardness bbut  our previous governments have failed to try out any alternative to this. This must improve as the time pass by.

It is the backbone of a civilized society and I'm very proud that kargil has a literacy rate of above 70% but but the quality of education being propagated is alarming. The govt must do something in this sector this time. People are sick of this worn out system. They want change and for that CEC and his colleagues have to be the torchbearers.
CORRUPTION
District kargil is among the top corrupt districts of India. Proper legal system and a seperate committee would do the task for them. People oppose offering bribe but  they have to Give it anyway. a smooth bureaucratic system is always welcomed and would make a lot to the middle section of them society.

EMPLOYMENT and RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE

Like every other place, in kargil too, there's a progressive increase of unemployed youth. The govt must not let the youth down  and should create opportunities for them. Also them recruitment system too is skewed. The same committee for recruitment is appointed again and again  the giving room for Corruption and favoritism.

UNION TERRITORY

It is upto this govt that Kargil is supporting UT status for ladakh or not. As Leh gear up for Demanding UT status To Ladakh , Kargilites don't have any idea so as to support it or not. The govt should Work this out with the opposition and give their stand on  UT Status to Ladakh. This is main.
The other aspects are the ZOJILA TUNNEL , Railway line, Extension of airport, Successful operation of the chutuk Project, Road to Zanskar, TWO WAY road To Chiktan, Deal with the  Post-Metric Scholarship SCAM.
The CEC should consider all this to secure a berth in the NEXT elections .

Chiktan , still waiting for tourists.

After diverting away  from the National Highway (NH1), Chiktan block of district Kargil in Ladakh region  is situated at a stretched strip of over 30 kms along the  Kanji Nalah. The whole population  of the Chiktan Valley  is dependent, directly or indirectly , on this River. This beautiful river originates from The Famous Kanji Glacier which is in Leh District  of Ladakh region .

Though Chiktan hasn't got a mention on the Tourism Map of Ladakh but believe me, there is much  more for the tourists than whole of the Ladakh has.
Chiktan has had an interesting history , one can not forget the famous carpenter from Baltistan , Shinkhann Tsandan , who is responsible for crafting the world famous CHIKTAN CITADEL(Chiktan Khar). This is a must visit for the tourists . The lovely craftsmanship leaves one' s tongue hanging .

The second tourism attraction must be The NINDUM peak. It is the highest mountain of the region. The ignorance of the administration can be guessed from the fact that we do not its height. The locals visit this mountain very often and after reaching  the top  they offer Salah (prayers). There is that interesting plane strip for this purpose . NINDUM  actually means "Nearer to The Sun" . Whole of the Ladakh Region can be seen from the top of this mountain in which the duo of NUN and KUN mountains in Zanskar are worth mentioning .

Ladakh is known for the world famous Pangong Lake but  Chiktan has got its own Pangong  popularly known as Shashi Tso. After crossing the Sandow Village , one can experience this beautiful sister of Pangong Lake  situated at the famous Shashi La.

This block has a majority of Shia Muslims but there are two or three buddhist villages who are known for their unity. The famous Photang At Boddhkharbu is yet another a tourist attraction for those who keep an interest in exploring Buddhism around the world. There are many other forts which have almost disappeared but the place where they are situated are astonishing. Samrah Khar, Stakchey Khar  and one on top of a peak  at Boddhkharbu are included in it.

We all know Ladakh has a very harsh climatic condition. The above said  destinations are almost impossible to explore during winter but for the winter dose, the folks have this everyone's favourite Ice-hockey. The rink at Pargue Village is the first Ice-Hockey rink of Kargil district.

Ladakh is also known for this World Famous Apricot   and you can enjoy it there at Sanjak Village in Chiktan during Summer. Remember , Sanjak is also Known as "Chhota Jammu" by the locals.

There is no facility for tourist guides is Chiktan itself but if you ask for the Locals to come as volunteers, they all are at your service , anytime. Hope you will have a good time in Chiktan this summer , Good Luck!!
